margin: 3px 7px;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jannelsonlandscapedesign.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/2014\/11\/Thanksgiving-table-arrangement.jpg?resize=246%2C271&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Thanksgiving-table-arrangement\" width=\"246\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jannelsonlandscapedesign.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/2014\/11\/Thanksgiving-table-arrangement.jpg?resize=279%2C307&amp;ssl=1 279w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jannelsonlandscapedesign.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/2014\/11\/Thanksgiving-table-arrangement.jpg?resize=582%2C640&amp;ssl=1 582w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jannelsonlandscapedesign.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/2014\/11\/Thanksgiving-table-arrangement.jpg?resize=500%2C549&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jannelsonlandscapedesign.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/2014\/11\/Thanksgiving-table-arrangement.jpg?resize=200%2C219&amp;ssl=1 200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jannelsonlandscapedesign.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/2014\/11\/Thanksgiving-table-arrangement.jpg?resize=900%2C988&amp;ssl=1 900w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jannelsonlandscapedesign.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/2014\/11\/Thanksgiving-table-arrangement.jpg?w=1422&amp;ssl=1 1422w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 246px) 100vw, 246px\" \/><\/a><strong>A Thanksgiving Poem<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>by <em>Jan Nelson, The Mountain Gardener<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Once<\/strong> <strong>upon a time<\/strong> when our area was under water<br \/>\nthere were no parks or trails or trees or gardens.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m thankful that our mountains rose from an ancient ocean<br \/>\nso we could enjoy this beautiful place we call home.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m thankful for the Bigleaf maples<br \/>\nthat shower me with leaves as big as saucers<br \/>\nas I walk in <em>Henry Cowell<\/em> along the River Trail<br \/>\nand for the giant redwoods that sprouted long ago<br \/>\nat the time of the Mayan civilization.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m thankful for the Five-fingered ferns that grow lush along<em> Fall Creek<\/em><br \/>\non the way to the old lime kilns<br \/>\nand for the canyons, hiking trails and small waterfalls<br \/>\nthat feed the year-round creeks.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m thankful for the sweet music of the violist<br \/>\nwho practices inside the <em>Felton Covered Bridge<\/em><br \/>\nand for the sound of children laughing as they play in the park.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m thankful for the pond and western turtles who live at <em>Quail Hollow<\/em><br \/>\nand for the unique sandhills, grasslands and redwoods, too,<br \/>\nand for the plants and other small creatures that live only there.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m thankful for the dog park and soccer field at <em>Skypark<\/em><br \/>\nwhere little kids and dogs both big and small have a place of their own<br \/>\nand for the picnic area and Fourth of July fireworks,<br \/>\nand for the Art and Wine festival and Music in the Park on summer nights.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m thankful for <strong>Bonny Doon<\/strong> where I can see both the Pacific and San Lorenzo Valley<br \/>\nand for the Ecological Reserve which is growing back nicely after the Martin Fire,<br \/>\nand for the fossilized marine animals and sharks teeth<br \/>\nthat are exposed in the mountain made of sand.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m thankful for California&#8217;s oldest state park. <strong>Big Basin<\/strong>, with its waterfalls and lush canyons<br \/>\nand slopes covered with redwoods sorrel, violets, fragrant azaleas, mountain iris<br \/>\nand for the salamanders, banana slugs, marbled murrelets<br \/>\nand red-legged frogs who make it their home.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m thankful for the whisper of the wind blowing across the water at <em>Loch Lomond<\/em><br \/>\nand for the gentle whir of fishing reels most years at the edge<br \/>\nof thick tanoaks, redwoods and madrone.<\/p>\n<p><em>And finally, I&#8217;m thankful for friends and family and neighbors who share all this with me.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Thanksgiving Poem by Jan Nelson, The Mountain Gardener Once upon a time when our area was under water there were no parks or trails or trees or gardens.
