\"Thanksgiving-table-arrangement\"<\/a>A Thanksgiving Poem<\/strong><\/p>\n

Once<\/strong> upon a time<\/strong> when our area was under water
\nthere were no parks or trails or trees or gardens.
\nI’m thankful that our mountains rose from an ancient ocean
\nso we could enjoy this beautiful place we call home.<\/p>\n

I’m thankful for the Bigleaf maples
\nthat shower me with leaves as big as saucers
\nas I walk in Henry Cowell<\/em> along the River Trail
\nand for the giant redwoods that sprouted long ago
\nat the time of the Mayan civilization.<\/p>\n

I’m thankful for the Five-fingered ferns that grow lush along Fall Creek<\/em>
\non the way to the old lime kilns
\nand for the canyons, hiking trails and small waterfalls
\nthat feed the year-round creeks.<\/p>\n

I’m thankful for the sweet music of the violist
\nwho practices inside the Felton Covered Bridge<\/em>
\nand for the sound of children laughing as they play in the park.<\/p>\n

I’m thankful for the pond and western turtles who live at Quail Hollow<\/em>
\nand for the unique sandhills, grasslands and redwoods, too,
\nand for the plants and other small creatures that live only there.<\/p>\n

I’m thankful for the dog park and soccer field at Skypark<\/em>
\nwhere little kids and dogs both big and small have a place of their own
\nand for the picnic area and Fourth of July fireworks,
\nand for the Art and Wine festival and Music in the Park on summer nights.<\/p>\n

I’m thankful for Bonny Doon<\/strong> where I can see both the Pacific and San Lorenzo Valley
\nand for the Ecological Reserve which is growing back nicely after the Martin Fire,
\nand for the fossilized marine animals and sharks teeth
\nthat are exposed in the mountain made of sand.<\/p>\n

I’m thankful for California’s oldest state park. Big Basin<\/strong>, with its waterfalls and lush canyons
\nand slopes covered with redwoods sorrel, violets, fragrant azaleas, mountain iris
\nand for the salamanders, banana slugs, marbled murrelets
\nand red-legged frogs who make it their home.<\/p>\n

I’m thankful for the whisper of the wind blowing across the water at Loch Lomond<\/em>
\nand for the gentle whir of fishing reels most years at the edge
\nof thick tanoaks, redwoods and madrone.<\/p>\n

And finally, I’m thankful for friends and family and neighbors who share all this with me.<\/em>
