{"id":391,"date":"2009-12-02T10:23:16","date_gmt":"2009-12-02T18:23:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.jannelsonlandscapedesign.com\/?p=391"},"modified":"2009-12-02T12:22:10","modified_gmt":"2009-12-02T20:22:10","slug":"a-thanksgiving-poem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jannelsonlandscapedesign.com\/wordpress\/2009\/12\/02\/a-thanksgiving-poem\/","title":{"rendered":"A Thanksgiving Poem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A Thanksgiving Poem<\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<em> by Jan Nelson<\/em><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" vspace=\"4\" hspace=\"3\" height=\"150\" border=\"3\" align=\"right\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jannelsonlandscapedesign.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/thanksgiving.jpg?resize=200%2C150&#038;ssl=1\" \/><br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <em>The Mountain Gardener<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Once upon a time<\/strong> when our area was under water<br \/>\nthere were no parks or trails or trees or gardens.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m thankful that our mountains rose from an ancient ocean<br \/>\nso we could enjoy this beautiful place we call home. <\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m thankful<\/strong> for the Bigleaf maples<br \/>\nthat shower me with leaves as big as saucers<br \/>\nas I walk in Henry Cowell along the River trail<br \/>\nand for the giant redwoods that sprouted long ago <br \/>\nat the time the Mayan civilization was emerging.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m thankful<\/strong> for the Five-fingered ferns that grow lush along Fall Creek <br \/>\non the way to the old lime kilns<br \/>\nand for the canyons, hiking trails and small waterfalls<br \/>\nthat feed the year-round creeks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m thankful<\/strong> for the sweet music of the violist <br \/>\nwho practices inside the Felton Covered Bridge <br \/>\nand for the sound of children laughing as they play in the park.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m thankful<\/strong> for the pond and western turtles who live at Quail Hollow<br \/>\nand for the unique sandhills, grasslands and redwoods, too, <br \/>\nand for the plants and other small creatures that live only there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m thankful<\/strong> for the dog park and soccer field at Skypark<br \/>\nwhere little kids and dogs both big and small have a place of their own<br \/>\nand for the bocce ball court and picnic area, the skatepark and&nbsp; Fourth of July fireworks,<br \/>\nfor the Art and Wine festival and Music in the Park on summer nights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m thankful<\/strong> for Bonny Doon where you can see the Pacific<br \/>\nand panoramas of the San Lorenzo and Scotts Valley <br \/>\nand for the wineries, lavender farm and fossilized marine animals and sharks teeth <br \/>\nthat are exposed in the mountain made of sand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m thankfu<\/strong>l for California&#8217;s oldest state park. Big Basin,with its waterfalls and lush canyons <br \/>\nand slopes covered with redwoods sorrel, violets and mountain iris<br \/>\nand for the salamanders, banana slugs, marbled murrelets<br \/>\nand red-legged frogswho make it their home.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m thankful<\/strong> for the whisper of the wind blowing across the water at Loch Lomond<br \/>\nand for the gentle whir of fishing reels at the edge <br \/>\nof thick tanoaks, redwoods and madrone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m thankful <\/strong>for the views from Pasatiempo&nbsp; <br \/>\nthat&#8217;s perched atop a knoll overlooking Monterey Bay<br \/>\nand for the golf course and historic Hollins House that we all enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>And finally,. <br \/>\nI wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving. <br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Thanksgiving Poem &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; by Jan Nelson &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Mountain Gardener Once upon a time when our area was under water there were no parks or trails or trees or gardens.
