{"id":47438,"date":"2023-12-22T14:02:46","date_gmt":"2023-12-22T22:02:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jannelsonlandscapedesign.com\/wordpress\/?p=47438"},"modified":"2023-12-22T14:02:46","modified_gmt":"2023-12-22T22:02:46","slug":"a-poem-for-christmas-by-the-mountain-gardener","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jannelsonlandscapedesign.com\/wordpress\/2023\/12\/22\/a-poem-for-christmas-by-the-mountain-gardener\/","title":{"rendered":"A Poem for Christmas by The Mountain Gardener"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"474\" height=\"319\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jannelsonlandscapedesign.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/2023\/12\/chipmunk3.jpg?resize=474%2C319&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-47439\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jannelsonlandscapedesign.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/2023\/12\/chipmunk3.jpg?resize=510%2C343&amp;ssl=1 510w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jannelsonlandscapedesign.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/2023\/12\/chipmunk3.jpg?resize=350%2C235&amp;ssl=1 350w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jannelsonlandscapedesign.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/2023\/12\/chipmunk3.jpg?resize=240%2C161&amp;ssl=1 240w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jannelsonlandscapedesign.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/2023\/12\/chipmunk3.jpg?w=744&amp;ssl=1 744w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Besides deer you might share your garden with chipmunks, too.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Twas the night before Christmas <\/strong>and all through the garden,<br \/>The creatures were stirring, the deer got a pardon.<br \/>The hummingbird feeders were hung by the chimney with care,<br \/>In hopes that the Anna&#8217;s soon would be there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The flowering cherries were nestled <\/strong>all snug in their beds,<br \/>While visions of spring glory danced in their heads.<br \/>The summer vegetables were harvested and beds put to nap,<br \/>The compost&#8217;s a brewing so next year&#8217;s a snap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When out on the lawn <\/strong>there rose such a clatter,<br \/>I ran into the garden to see what was the matter.<br \/>And what to my wondering eyes should appear,<br \/>But a big flock of chickadees and eight black-tailed deer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>They spoke not a word<\/strong>, but went straight to their work,<br \/>The chickadees devouring aphids with amazing teamwork.<br \/>And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the deck,<br \/>Prancing and pawing, the deer making a wreck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A hydrangea here<\/strong>, an abutilon there, this garden\u2019s a feast,<br \/>With edibles and perennials at the very least.<br \/>We love this garden, they whispered to themselves,<br \/>With any luck, they&#8217;ll think we&#8217;re the elves !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Beautiful flowers and nectar<\/strong> and fragrance abounds,<br \/>We&#8217;ll include this forever on one of our rounds.<br \/>The birds can sing and fly in the skies<br \/>But we have the charm with huge brown doe-eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We get a bad rap,<\/strong> it&#8217;s not all our fault,<br \/>Most of our feeding grounds are covered with asphalt.<br \/>Just give us a sleigh and we&#8217;ll make you proud,<br \/>We&#8217;re good for more than eating roses, they vowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Call us Dasher and Dancer<\/strong> and Comet and Vixen,<br \/>Or Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen,<br \/>Then maybe you&#8217;ll forgive us for our past mistakes,<br \/>We can&#8217;t help that we eat plants, we just don&#8217;t eat steaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Now if you&#8217;ve been good this year<\/strong>, do make a wish,<br \/>And then when you see us- welcome, don\u2019t banish.<br \/>All of us creatures will give our best shot,<br \/>To nourish your garden with nary a thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So everybody listen carefully <\/strong>on Christmas Eve,<br \/>And maybe you&#8217;ll hear and then you&#8217;ll believe.<br \/>You may even hear us exclaim as we prance out of sight,<br \/>&#8220;Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>My thanks to Clement Clark Moore who wrote the original poem in 1822 in New York.
