Mt. Hermon Garden of Eden

    grape arbor (before)
This property is located in the sandy soil of the Mt. Hermon area of Felton and contains has both sunny and shady areas as well as gophers and deer in the front garden.

The owners wanted their garden to be inviting as they entertain often. The front yard is very structured with the series of retaining walls to oneside of the steep driveway and the other side had a erosion problem in the winter. The front entry also needed some drama and color.

The back yard consisted of more retaining walls and fruit rees but little else except Naked ladies. One of the main requests for this project was to include lots of flowers and color.

The owners agreed that there would be some maintenance for the perennials but they both love to be out in the garden anyway. The owner researched and chose most of the plant material used. Both color and fragrance were main considerations. One area was redone with a grape arbor and sitting area to enjoy the afternoon sunset and the trees in the distance. A small putting green and sand trap were also installed for the owner to enjoy. Pathways were used to create garden rooms and access to the sloping area. Small steps were designed to accomodate the owner?s elderly parents footing when they came to visit.

The owners plan to do some remodeling in the future and this was taken into consideration in the garden areas close to the house. This garden is loved by the owners who like to share their beautiful creation with friends and family. More flowers will be added on a seasonal basis.

    driveway lighting (before)
This front area along the driveway needed color to invite guests to the front door. Lighting was required for the safety of people walking down the driveway which served as a walkway. Edging was needed to contain the soil during winter rains.

    driveway lighting (after)
Lots of colorful perennials and shrubs were planted to provide interest throughout the year. Attractive path lighting was added at intervals along the edge of the driveway accenting both the plants and providing the required light for pedestrian safety.

sitting area under apple tree (before)
This area near the back of the property was unused and the clients requested that it somehow be incorporated into the rest of the garden. An beloved apple tree was the only reason the owners had for going down to the back area.

A wide path was installed which encouraged circulation throughout the entire property. A sitting are was left under the apple tree and a love seat placed there. Many perennials line the path and provide interest throughout the year. Acanthus, foxglove, lamb's ears, helichrysum, salvia and lavender are just some of the plants along this beautiful path.

    path to putting green (before)
The neighbor's fence dominated this view on the property and the client had always wanted his own putting green. Amaryllis belladona were the only plants scattered throughout besides an old photinia that had a lot of dieback. Again the clients wanted to use their entire property in the new garden.

    path to putting green (after)
A wide decomposed granite path with landscape timber steps leads to the new putting green tucked in on the left. Russian sage, lavender, lavatera, Biokova hardy geranium and foxglove that self sow are showy perennials featured along the new path.
